My heart dog, my beloved beast Hunter, is turning two on the 26th of May. I wanted to bake him something special for his big day, and thought pupcakes would be an excellent makeshift birthday cake! What are pupcakes you ask? They are dog-friendly cupcakes that are much healthier than our own version of the delicious treat.

This pupcake recipe is grain-free, made with nutritious coconut flour that is phenomenal for the dog's skin and coat. If you want to make the wheat flour version of this pupcake recipe, substitute 1/2 cup of coconut flour with 1 cup of whole wheat flour.

Grain-Free Peanut Butter and Banana Pupcakes
  • 1 cup of peanut butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 mashed bananas
  • 1/2 cup of coconut flour
  • 1/4 cup of cottage cheese
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp raw honey

Peanut Butter Icing
  • 6 oz of cream cheese
  • 4 oz of smooth peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil

Directions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit .
  2. Line a muffin pan with paper muffin cups.
  3. In a large bowl mix the peanut butter, eggs, bananas, cottage cheese and honey. Mix in the coconut flour and baking soda. Mix well.
  4. Use two spoons to drop dollops of dough into the muffin cups and fill the cups 3/4 of the way.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
  6. Let your dogs lick the spoons clean. (Very important step!)
  7. In a small bowl cream together the cream cheese, oil and peanut butter.
  8. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes.
  9. Let the muffins cool then ice the pupcakes and place freeze dried liver treats on top.
  10. Serve, and enjoy the delight on their faces as they chow down!

I want to use some space here to wish my beautiful boy a very happy second birthday! We will be at a dog event on May 26th when he turns two, so I will be bringing a container of pupcakes with me for him and his friends to celebrate with.

Hunter, you are my heart and soul. My protector, my loyal companion, my constant shadow, my working partner, my cuddlebug, my world. I love you to pieces, Hunter. Happy birthday, my boy. <3

Thanks for this great recipe!! I always wish I could do something special for our dogs' birthdays - this sounds like something they would scarf up in a minute - (of course, my Lab would scarf anything up in a minute) - anyway - I might even try these cupcakes!

Happy Birthday to your baby Hunter....he is so gorgeous. I can't wait to try these-I'm sure Baron is going to LOVE them. Every time I make a batch of treats for him, my bosses 5 Doxies get a batch as well, and I am pretty sure these will be a HUGE hit!

That was so cool, that you celebrate your pets birthday! I do the same thing for my cat Sam. Every year, 8 years now, I make him a fish cake. I frost it with cream cheese and shrimp I whip up in the food processor, and make eyes and scales. He looks forward to that and the balloons and presents. He has 4 friends that come around to visit, so they get some. Oh, I make the cake out of salmon, eggs, bread crumbs and some herbs. Sam is very special to me, so I make holidays and especially his birthday special for him.

Chickpea flour or rice flour are also good options!

Can anyone attest to the edibility of these as far as human consumption (obviously skipping liver treats!)? They look pretty good, and healthy to boot!

Michael - Zero sugar in this recipe, so it will not be sweet enough for human consumption. The addition of cottage cheese to the cupcake is all for a dog's palate - not so much for the human! The icing is just peanut butter and cream cheese - again, not sweet. You are welcome to try it, nothing you can't eat, but may not be sweet enough.

I'll admit, when I made these for my toy aussie's birthday I tried one and nearly gagged. The icing wouldn't be so bad if you add sugar to it though lol

I plan to try these for my baby boy Jacks birthday next week. I just want to thank you for providing these wonderful healthy recipes. I started using them for my baby Vladimir who was epileptic. I didn't trust store bought treats for him as they may have had something in them that would trigger an episode. I also fed him a all natural diet. Your site helped me to give him tasty healthy treats that I knew I could trust you don't know how much that means to me. All though he has gone to the rainbow bridge I still use your recipes for his sisters and brothers and they love them!! I thank you and they thank you!

Thank you so much! We enjoy all your treats!! This was a first for my 8 year olds birthday. Just wondering how long the pupcakes will keep in the fridge? I've frosted all of them already so hopefully they can freeze like that ;) Again, we appreciate all you do and our dog Rodney is over the moon!

Hi! I just found your site a week ago and I love it. I was wondering if I doubled the recipe it will make a 6 inch cake or larger? Thank you for your wonderful recipes.

This is perfect for added benefits for my dog who can't have grains nor carb subs like potatoe, soy, etc. I use Quinoa,Buckwheat and now Coconut..BUt can't have DAIRY product either. What would you sub for consistency in place of cottage cheese. ? thanks

Chris you could try applesauce, I have seen it in a lot of other dog recipes. I don't know if the consistency will be exactly the same but I figured the flavor would go well.

Made these for my 2 year Golden Retrievers birthday. He loved them SO much, he stole 3 off the counter. I did however add 3 large carrots (finely chopped) into the batter and they baked perfectly.

Just tried this recipe for our pup Sugar's 2nd birthday. We brought them to our Puppy Class and threw a party. Substituted high protein Greek yogurt for the cottage cheese. Big hit! Thanks for posting.

I made these for my puppy's 5th birthday. This recipe made a dozen of them - I let him lick the spoon and OMG... HE CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT! I also added a shredded carrot at the beginning of the mix. Topped it off with Freeze-Dried Beef Nibs and dog friendly Holisitc Bacon Chips (Ingredients: USDA Beef Liver, Bacon, Pumpkin). He hasn't eaten an entire pupcake yet, but he loved the mix AND the icing! Can't wait to see his face when he eats one this week! I wrapped each pupcake individually with saran wrap and tied them with a yellow bow and put them in the freezer. Does anyone know how long I can keep them in the freezer for?

I might be blind or overall bad at baking, but what does one single batch make? 6 pupcakes? I can’t see anywhere what the yield is.
