Halloween is a fun, exciting and spooky time of the year for people and dogs alike! So many people incorporate their furry family members into these fun celebrations, it is important to send a message of safety and care for our canine companions on Halloween night!

Not all dogs enjoy the scary costumes, spooky decorations, frightening soundtracks and noises, and the excited hustle and bustle of children dressed as ghouls on Halloween day. It is important to know your dog, and know what they can and cannot handle. If your dog struggles with fear or is uncomfortable with all the excitement of Halloween night, it would be best to provide them with a safe and quiet place for them to spend the evening. Avoid exposing a frightened or nervous dog to the sometimes stressful aspects of Halloween, we don't want them to endure situations that are frightening or upsetting for them if they don't have to.

Be wary of all the chocolate and Halloween candy that will likely be very accessible for dogs on Halloween night. Store candy in high places, within containers or cupboards, and take special measures for dogs who counter surf. Chocolate and some artificial sweeteners are highly toxic to dogs; Reports of dogs passing away from eating chocolate are common. If your dog consumes Halloween candy, take them to your veterinarian immediately so that they can have your dog vomit the candy as soon as possible and so that they can administer some medication to help the body avoid absorbing the toxic aspects of the candy.

Supervising your dogs around the Halloween directions will ensure that they do not chew and eat any decorations. If they do chew and eat decorations, it could cause intestinal obstruction which would require emergency surgery. To prevent any unnecessary stress and potential illness, supervise your dogs around the decorations and keep them somewhere safe when you cannot supervise.

If your dog enjoys all the fun and excitement of Halloween and is kid, dog and people friendly - consider taking them for a walk with your family while you trick or treat! They will love spending time with you and being involved in a family activity!  There are tons of different Halloween costume for dogs, so if they are happy and are not bothered by a costume, it is a fun way to enjoy the season and make others smile!

Keep your dogs safe, and have a Happy Halloween!

Thanks for sharing the article, and more importantly, your personal experience of mindfully using our emotions as data about our inner state and knowing when it’s better to de-escalate by taking a time out are great tools. Appreciate you reading and sharing your story since I can certainly relate and I think others can to
