Designed for the working dog, dogs active in sports, and dogs with active lifestyles. Many dogs are always on the go and weight can be shed very quickly. These "power bars" are healthy high protein and high calorie alternatives to junk food dog treats. I cooked up this recipe in honour of my working dog, Hunter, who has trouble keeping weight on and is so active in the summer that he needs some extra calories!

These are great to take on hikes and to training and trialing events, offer one or two to restore energy and provide protein to continue preforming to the best of their ability.

INGREDIENTS
  • 3 cups of chickpea (garbanzo bean) flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of mashed, boiled sweet potato
  • 1/2 cup of banana mashed
  • 1/4 cup of raw local honey

DIRECTIONS
  1. Boil sweet potato until soft, mash and let cool.
  2. Mash enough banana to fill 1/2 a cup.
  3. In a large bowl mix the chickpea flour, mashed sweet potato, mashed banana, honey and egg together thoroughly. The batter should be similar to a banana bread batter.
  4. Grease a baking pan with extra virgin olive oil and fill it with the batter.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Let cool, cut into small squares!

Would like to use your recipe in my Newfie club newsletter. This would be great for those of us that are doing water training and draft training. Would give credit to your blog page.

Thank You

I Use Oat Flour... Never Wheat Flour...
Just buy some Oat's and then put them in a Blender..
Blend for 1 minute... then you have Oat Four..

Thanks for Sharing! This recipe is good. This is why so many people have decided to take matters in their own hands. It's the best way to know what goes into your dog's food. By preparing homemade dog food recipes right in our own kitchens, we know we are feeding our dogs, fresh foods and ingredients, without the use of preservatives, artificial ingredients, or any other contaminates that can harm our dogs. Nice Post :D

My very active border collies LOVE these treats. One even chose them over a piece of Salmon jerky, which WAS their favorite. I feel like I am really giving them a healthy, enegry providing treat when we are out skiing or biking.

I buy it from a store called "bulk barn" that supplies all different types of flours in large bins. Perhaps you can even find chickpea flour in grocery stores or health food stores?

Can I replace the chickpea flour with coconut flour?

Yes, you can, but it may turn out more like a soft cookie as opposed to a dense cake-like "bar" snack.

Can I substitute the sweet potato for pumpkin, or is it best with sweet potato?

You didn't mention what size pan to use or how thick they should be, so I used a small cookie sheet which made them about a 1/4" thick and it worked out really well! Thank you for all these recipes and I love your site!

Can I freeze these to bring on future hikes for my dog? If so, what is the longest recommended time frozen until I should throw them out ?

My dog is fighting cancer and some of the meds make him not so interested in his dog food so I have been cooking for him. Mainly Rice, chicken and beef. Some Eggs. some toast and peanut butter. would these be a good treat to make sure he is getting the nutrients and protein he needs?

This seems like a great recipe. ImI interested in making some high protein medium/high calorie treats/bars for my dog when we go on hikes. How much protein ánd how many calories per serving?

Thank you so much for sharing. I'll have to check out your other recipes.
