Minimal Vaccine Protocol for Dogs

The minimal vaccine protocol was developed by Dr. Jean Dodds and provides pet owners with an alternative to the extreme vaccine schedules recommended by most veterinarians. To learn more about why over-vaccinating your pet with many different vaccines is dangerous, read my article: The dangers of over-vaccinating your dog.

So why should you put your dog on a minimal vaccine protocol? Vaccines are full of toxic chemicals that are very hard on a dog's body, such as aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde, and oils. These additives, among the others found in the vaccine liquid that holds the disease, have no place being in your pet's body. Studies have shown that there is likely a connection between these harsh chemicals and cancer in both pets and humans. Research also shows that over vaccination can lead to other diseases and disorders.

In reality, much like us, dogs do not need to be re-vaccinated for diseases as often as veterinarians recommend. Immunity duration for vaccines such as parvovirus and distemper typically last approximately 7 years, so instead of vaccinating every year it is best to run an antibody titer test for those diseases. A titer test will check the level of immunity your dog has three years after getting the vaccine. By doing titers instead of vaccinating, you prevent your dog from being bombarded by the toxic chemicals additives found in pet vaccines. By avoiding unnecessary vaccination you also prevent your dog's immune system from going through extreme stress.

After the initial set of puppy shots, the dog likely will not need anymore vaccinations for the rest of their life. Immunity duration is long, just like with our own human vaccines.  You can do titer tests every year to check levels of immunity in the blood before you decide to re-vaccinate.

* It is important to note that vaccinating your dog against parvovirus, distemper and rabies is very important because these disease are deadly and often result in death. However, the vaccine is NOT required yearly for the majority of dogs. A titer test is a blood test that tests the dogs level of immunity to a certain disease. A yearly titer test is a great, healthy alternative to yearly vaccination.

It is also important to discuss what diseases are prevalent in your area with your veterinarian, as some dogs might require different vaccines due to location and risk of exposure.

MINIMAL VACCINE PROTOCOL FOR DOGS
9 WEEK OF AGE:
Parvovirus + Distemper

14 WEEKS OF AGE:
Parvovirus + Distemper

17 WEEKS OF AGE:
Parvovirus + Distemper

20 WEEKS OF AGE:

Rabies

AT 1 YEAR OF AGE:
Parvovirus + Distemper FINAL (Titers from now on, every 3 years.)

Four weeks after the parvo + distemper one year booster you should give your dog the three year rabies vaccine. The rabies vaccine is required by law so it must be given every three years.

Do you think it would be safe to just administer the parvovirus combo every 3 even if you didn't get the titer. None of the vets around me offer this. My lasts baby died of lymphoma so I'm trying to go as natural as possible.

This would be a good time to tell your Vet about VacciCheck. It is a Titer test that can be done in house at your Vet. Will give results in about 21 min. It is FDA approved!

What about all other vacs my vet insists upon: Lyme, canine influenza, bordatella (every 6 months), regardless of dogs advanced age.

The rabies vaccine is the same for both the one year and three year the first time they give the vac it's only good for a year if you get it just under or exactly a year later then it's good for 3 but its the same vac. If they gave you the certificate saying its good for 3 the person putting the information into the computer made a mistake and you should go back and have them fix it. I know this because I'm a vet tech and an ACO : )

Hi! Does it apply to all countries? Are vaccine protocols the same all throughout the rest of the world? I am living in the Philippines and the usual protocol here is annual booster. Please be reminded that we have lots of stray dogs and virus is easily spread here, my dog had distemper some years ago, luckily he survived that is why I am very worried and always say yes to vaccination for protection. I hope I can get answers, I really want to discuss this with our vet.

Hi! Just wondering is it safe to expose a puppy to other dogs and areas where dogs have been when they are between the ages of 8 to 16 weeks and following the recommended vaccine schedule? I was under the impression that whole the series of parvo and distemper should be completed first. Thank you!

The only issue would be when you take your pet to events where proof of shots are needed, doggy daycare, and even boarding facilities. They want to see current records, and they go along With the veterinarian recommendations. So if you keep your dog isolated and not socialized, this vaccination regimen works.

Thank you for writing this and getting the word out. EVERY year I got a rabies vaccination for my Scotties because the groomer refused to groom them otherwise. The vet always gave them the shot, and never once mentioned titer tests or the dangers of over-vaccinating. My dear dogs died too soon, one of pancreatic cancer, the other developed Cushings and a sinus cancer. I believe our dear Scotties die of cancer because of this, and the kibbie we give them, most of which has starches, which feed cancer.

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate your canine companion? A pet parent always faces difficulty to find the answer to this question. He needs to educate himself on the contemporary vaccination excises in order to avoid over-vaccinating his furry companion. If a pet owner gives his pooch a shot at the wrong time, then this overdose can put your pup's health at risk. So, before vaccinating your four-legged family member, you should ask a capable veterinarian, because he is the one who can do various tests and health exams to tell you whether your puppy is actually demanding a shot or not.

Thanks for the advice to run an antibody titer test to check if my dog still has an immunity to parvovirus and distemper. It is smart to make sure your dog needs the vaccine before giving it to him. I will have to see which vets in my area offer this. My dog is due for his 1-year vaccine soon!
