There is no need to worry about pet treat recalls when you are baking healthy, wholesome homemade dog treats right at home! This homemade turkey and sweet potato dog cookie recipe is both inexpensive and super easy to make! With only 2 ingredients, your pet's health and your wallet are getting all the benefits!

This homemade dog treat recipe is super simple! All you need is flour (whole wheat or all purpose) and organic dog-friendly baby food! That's right: baby food! Baby food is very inexpensive, super healthy (should contain no junk and useless fillers) and easy to use! While you can use any flavor of baby food, I used turkey and sweet potato for this cookie! If you use something different, make sure it does not have any of the known dangerous foods for dogs.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups of flour (whole wheat or all purpose flour)
  • 2 four-oz jars of turkey and sweet potato baby food

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 350° F.
  2. Add your flour into a mixing bowl and combine with the 2 jars of baby food.
  3. Roll the dough out on a cutting board and use a cookie cutter to shape the cookies.
  4. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, put the cookies on the cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 350° F for 20 - 25 minutes.
You may need to add some more flour or a bit of water to get the dog cookie dough to be the right consistency, it depends on what type of baby food you've used.

Could you use coconut flour with this recipe?

I am going to test a batch with coconut flour today for a grain-free version of the recipe, I will need to work on it because coconut flour is very different to bake with and it will likely need some eggs.

It will be up later this week!

I use coconut flour all the time for Rascals cookies. You do need to watch tho as some times you either need to ad more flour or more egg

Did you ever test a batch with coconut flour? Very curious and would like to make these with that type of flour. Thanks so much for your assistance.

Eggs are a perfect addition. Why not make it with fresh cooked sweet potatoes and cooked turkey rather then baby food?

I just made a batch with coconut flour-it doesn't hold together as well as all-purpose, but I rolled them out with all-purpose and the texture improved. (I also had to add an egg. My corgi is in heaven!! Thanks for posting!

Yes, it does work well with brown rice flour. I still use an a beaten egg to the recipe as a binder. Plus a smidge of water.

Keep them in the refrigerator in an air-tight container or zip lock bag. They will last for weeks. Or separate them out and freeze them. They will last longer.

I made the peanut butter applesauce ones, and since I have a small dog and the recipe made tons, I put them in the freezer and just take out a couple days worth at a time. Should work for these too.

Besides the website I publish a small pet magazine, I am located in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada. I would like to use this recipe in my Winter issue of OK Kritters. Would that be OK?

Hi. I enjoy reading your FB posts and have purchased your "A Guide to Raw Feeding" ebook. I know you comment often about feeding our pets breed specific diets. So I have to ask, where does wheat fit into a dog's diet?

Reply

It is meant entirely as a treat, not a staple in the diet. Most of my recipes, as you likely know, are grain free using coconut flour or some similar gluten free product. However, some people want to use wheat (easy, convenient) and there is a need for healthy wheat recipes - so I have 2 or 3 recipes that use regular flour. It's all about meeting everyone's needs! :)

I just made these using Beechnut Chicken & Chicken broth in the 2.5 oz jars so I used 2. I used the 4oz Sprout Organic baby food hat was Carrot, Sweet Potatoe and Brown Rice and I put 1 Tblsp. Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and the 2 cups of flour. The dough was easy to roll. I actuallyput it between 2 pieces of wax paper and rolled it out. No too thin and used the baby jar as the cookie cutter. Perfect size. Baked at 350 for 25 min. turning them over once. I did use the parchment paper. I tried 1/2 of one and it was good then I gave it to my GSD and she loved it. I even gave a piece to my picky Pom and she also ate it. No more buying treats for me, homemade it is for our dogs. Now I think I will look for a recipe for my horses.

Cindy I just made these today. I used Gerber Sweetpotato and Turkey,
it was two containers in one package. So I used both of them.

I used dog bone & fire hydrant cookie cutters, I didn't know how thick to roll them so I did 1/4", they are a bit moist still after 25 minutes plus some have a big bubble. I may pierce them and roll to 1/8" next time. I used 2 different flavors of babyfood, 1 is in a squeeze packet and called apples and sweet potatoes, the other in a jar was a chicken and something. I used whole wheat flour. Dogs loved them but they are pretty easy to please. GREAT idea!

What's the point of home-cooked if you are using processed baby food? Why not boil up some potatoes, mash, add ground turkey, an egg white, flour and roll and cut and bake. Throw in some coconut oil while you are at it.

So these treats turn out like a bubble. Seems like there is air in them or did I over cook them? Are they supposed to be flat?

You can buy turkey sweet potato mixed in one jar, or use one of each. I have used 2 jars of sweet potato and it was fine also.
