The Kong is a universal toy enjoyed by dogs everywhere, and is likely one of the most infamous dog toys on the market. The kong is a durable, safe chew toy for puppies and dogs and can also be used for feeding and providing your dog with a snack!

While there are many different treats, kibbles and pre-made fillings to put inside of your dog's kong, nothing beats a nutritious recipe you can make right at home. The great thing about making your own kong filling is that you can control the nutritious ingredients your canine companion will enjoy! Adding yoghurt or cottage cheese can add a boost of probiotics that have proven themselves very beneficial for our dogs!

Yoghurt and Peanut Butter Crunch!
  • 2 cups of plain, unsweetened yoghurt
  • 1 cup of crunchy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons of freeze-dried liver treats

Combine the yoghurt and peanut butter until they are mixed together well, then lightly fold in the freeze dried liver treats. Fill the Kong and feed it either cool or frozen!

Cheesy Potato Delight!
  • 2 cups of mashed sweet potato
  • 1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 cup of cottage cheese
  • Two tablespoons of shredded cheddar cheese

Combine all of the ingredients and fill the kong! Feed either warm or frozen!

Pumpkin and Grilled Cheese Bites!
  • 1 cup of pure pumpkin (not the pie filling)
  • 2 cups of grilled cheese sandwich cut into bite sized pieces

Use whole wheat bread and cheddar cheese to make the sandwiches, then cut them up into approximately 1-inch bite sized pieces. Combines the grilled cheese bites with the pumpkin and fill the kong. Feed frozen or warm!

Cream Cheese and Cookie Snack!
  • 1 cup of cream cheese
  • 1 cup of plain yoghurt
  • 1/2 cup of your dog's favourite cookies, broken into small bite sized pieces

Combine cream cheese and yoghurt, then fold in the cookie pieces. Freeze and serve!

Fruity Parfait!
  • 1 cup of plain yoghurt
  • 1 small mashed banana
  • 2 tablespoons of blueberries

Fold the banana and blueberries into the yoghurt, then freeze and serve!

Delicious Pumpkin Pie!

  • 1 cup of pure pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/2 of a banana

Combine all ingredients by folding them together, fill the kong and serve either warm or frozen!

Try any of these recipes and you can be sure your dog will love them! They are healthy, homemade and delicious!

Thank you for this post. I was just trying to think of some good recipes to fill my dog's Kong with and these ones sound great. He's not a huge fan of peanut butter but loves anything with yogurt.

Hi,

I have been told that dairy product can upsetting dogs' stomach. So I am not sure by adding yoghurt & cream cheese are the right way to do?

Thanks
Imelda

Imelda, in my experience only a few dogs are sensitive to diary - most do absolutely fine on it. :)

I rinse mine out and then put it in the dishwasher on the top rack. I don't know if this is recommended by Kong but it doesn't seem to hurt them at all.

Hi I've just found out about u on FB. Wow I will be reading yr blogs everyday.
I have a gorgeous very shy nearly 5yr female GSD. Bella is my World.
I've recently become a Paraplegic so I'm pretty much house bound but take her for walks around the block in my wheelchair when I can. She recently had 2 Seizers a week ago. OMG it scared the crap out of me. Rushed her to the vet after the first one and they took bloods and was all clear? I took her home but she had another one bout 15mins after we got home. So back to the vet hospital we went. She stayed in for over 24hrs. Still not sure why she had those two. Maybe it was the heat but it was very early in the morning?? She does stress easily?? But I'm keeping an extra close eye on her. She's an inside dog.
Anyway just wanted to tell you I'm going to become a new fan by the looks of it. Lol.
Thinking of switching her to the raw diet myself or mixing it with the Eukanuba dry food and Raw meat.
Thanx. Margie.

Thank you so much for your support, but get her off the Eukanuba IMMEDIATELY!! Grains are VERY BAD for a dog with seizures. Make the switch to raw, you won't regret it!

I just made the Pumpkin Pie for my 16 week old GSD and he loved it. He even licked the bowl when I was finished mixing : )
We have Brewer on a RAW diet and your recipes are perfect for our lifestyle. To help portion out the pie I scooped it into extra ice trays so that I have plenty on hand. Since summer is coming I though I can add a few into his kong to help him cool off and enjoy a summer treat.

Thank you for the great ideas!

Thanks for the recipes, I'm sure my pitties will love 'em. Just a quick note though, "infamous" means bad.

I just made the pumpkin pie recipe for my pup gator and he loves it. All ingredients were organic. We r slowly making the change to organic as a family. I let him eat the filling in his kennel but it didn't make a mess as I thought it might. Thanks for the recipes.

My 8 month old girl seems to vomit with plain yogurt. I haven't tried cottage cheese yet, do you think it may do the same as yogurt?

These recipes look great! We already know our big guy likes peanut butter and banana. Always licked clean!

Do you approve of these type of treats for activity/engagement while being crated, without supervision? He is 2 yrs old and new to us, for the time being he relaxes during the typical work day.

Also, kong's are dishwasher safe supposedly. Do you recommend or wash by hand?
