Turmeric root (also known as curcumin) is a world renowned spice that is one of the most thoroughly researched plants in existence today. Used most commonly in cooking, turmeric is also used medicinally to treat a wide variety of conditions and alleviate certain symptoms. Turmeric is recognized by its rich orange color and earthy scent, being a member of the ginger family.

Used heavily in Eastern food, Asian food and
Chinese medicine - the highly potent benefits of turmeric have been studied for many decades. While turmeric has the ability to heal our pets in many different ways, it is important to recognize turmeric's role in helping to prevent cancer in our dogs. It is estimated that nearly 6 million dogs die from cancer each year, a number that is utterly crippling. With statistics that unsettling, we need to be proactive in preventive care to lessen the risk of cancer in our canine family members.

Turmeric is not just an old wives tale! Its medicinal properties (derived from its primary component curcumin) have been the subject of over 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies.

The main component of Turmeric is curcumin, a substance that has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin is
a bio-active substance that fights inflammation at the molecular level. This makes turmeric ideal for senior pets, dogs with arthritis and poor joint health, and any condition with inflammation as a symptom. The anti-inflammatory properties is turmeric are so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs. (Except without the bad side effects!) Turmeric is also a strong antioxidant, helping to neutralize free radicals in the body while stimulating the body's own antioxidant enzymes.

  • Anti-inflammatory. ( Research 1 & 2 )
  • Antioxidant.
  • Anti-cancer fighting properties. ( Research 1 & 2 & 3 )
  • Improved brain function. ( Research 1 & 2 )
  • Promotes a healthy heart. ( Research 1 )
  • Anti-aging. ( Research 1 & 2 )
  • Alleviates symptoms of allergies.
  • Helps detoxify liver.
  • Digestive aid.
  • Helps prevent formation of cataracts.
  • Helps prevent and reduce parasite overload.
  • Antimicrobial and antibacterial.

How do I give Turmeric to my dog?

Turmeric can be added directly to your dog's food regardless of their diet, or mixed with a moist carrier such as coconut oil, cottage cheese, plain unsweetened yoghurt, organic peanut butter, canned raw green tripe or kefir. Ideally, for max absorption, you should mix your dog's dose of turmeric with unrefined, virgin coconut oil and black pepper.

The general rule for dosage is 1/8th of a teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight.

If you are going to switch to a Raw food diet, it is absolutely CRITICAL that you make the transition slowly from kibble to raw. Dogs tummies our very sensitive. It is also very important to know that not ALL dogs do well on a 100% raw diet. So watch and listen to your doggie as you make the transition.

Turmeric raw and in powder forms are widely used by the Thais, Malaysian Chinese, Malaysian Indians, Malays and Indonesians and Indonesian Chinese in their cooking and medicinal purposes. Oh yes and by Singaporeans too. Also used by the Indochinese i.e Vietnamese. So the article is correct. I love turmeric. Am glad for the person who gave this article. I know turmeric is anti-cancer. Now I know how much and how best to give to my doggies. THANK YOU Angel and K9 Instinct for the useful article. I pray all pets with cancer will find healing today. God bless you all.

While recovering from a revision surgery for knee replacement, my othopedist observed that the bone growth around the base of the metal tibial post was slow. I stopped taking Ibuprofen and Celebrex, which can slow down bone growth, and switched to Tumeric/Black Pepper/Curcumin supplements. My leg is healing much faster, and the Tumeric is almost as effective as ibuprofen for pain. I've started giving a little bit of it to my 11 year old arthritic Keeshond, and it visibly helps her. I highly recommend it.

How many times a day should I give turmeric to my dog? Is it with every meal or only once a day?

Only given 1 time a day, due to it's blood thinner qualitys. Depending on who you talk to the rule of delivery is 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon per every 10 lbs. My vet told me 1/4 tsp to every 10 lbs & only 1 time a day. Pet owners of dogs with blood disorders need to consult their vet.

You need to add freshly ground black pepper to the Turmeric and oil to make it truly effective. There is a FB page called Turmeric User Group which covers humans and all pets and horses.

Juanita, I just tried searching for that group and only 1 member and it's closed. I did find Tumeric Users Forum though. I just asked to join bc I'm VERY interested in learning all there is about it. I need to start my boy on something for his back arthritic leg. :(

Wal-Mart has cumin for $1.00. We bought some for our Terrier Mix. It seems to be working. He was diagnosed with an enlarged heart in July. Since putting him on cumin the hairball coughs have stopped.

Everything I've been told & read say powdered is best. - you can add a scoop of pumpkin purée as well & mix with the food. My hound lived it & it was amazing for her hips & irratated eyes.

It is the same as you purchase in the spice section of the grocery store. It is safe for dogs of all ages--dosage is by weight. It is fine in addition to other supplements such as milk thistle. Use coconut oil with the tumeric for maximum absorption. Adding to a meal is fine.

yes the same as someone else stated but I'd look for an organic one. You don't want those GMO's interfering.

Ask your vet about that. If your dog refuses to eat the cumin powder you can give it to your dog through a pill. The pills can be bought on http://www.pureformulas.com/curcumin-97-90-tabletsvet-care-product-by-ayush-herbs.html?CUSTOMTRACKING=CUSTOMTRACKING&CAWELAID=530005240006108045&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=13612681616&CATCI=pla-82778180313&catargetid=530005240002492072&cadevice=c&gclid=CO_48eaAgM8CFdgNgQod3J8KLg .

Is that an 1/8 tsp (per 10lbs of dog's weight) of the turmeric powder alone? Should I add it to a tsp of coconut oil and grind a bit of pepper into it? Thanks

Once I get organic Turmeric I plan to add the pepper and Coconut Oil and add to their food. They may not like the powder dryness on the food.
