Autumn is here; The weather is getting colder and the trees are changing colours. What better way to celebrate the season of fall then by baking an easy, inexpensive tray of homemade dog treats filled with the flavours of the season!

Warm your home with the aroma of apples, cinnamon and pumpkin while making your furry family members a healthy treat they can truly enjoy that also carries with it some health benefits. These aromatic cookies are made with wholesome coconut flour, which is grain and gluten free and can improve the condition of your dog's skin and coat. Cinnamon is a stomach soother that can also help regulate blood sugar, improve digestion and alleviate inflammation. I've paired the Cinnamon with pure unsweetened applesauce and pure pumpkin puree, both of which are packed full of nutrition! Pumpkin can improve digestion, help firm stool up and soothe an upset tummy.

Picture
INGREDIENTS
  • 2 1/2 cups of coconut flour
  • 1 cup of applesauce
  • 1 1/2 cups of pure pumpkin puree (NOT pie filling)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 4 eggs

DIRECTIONS
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a large bowl add your coconut flour, pure pumpkin puree, unsweetened applesauce, cinnamon and eggs.
  3. Combine all 5 ingredients and mix thoroughly.
  4. Cut out your shape of preference with a cookie cutter, then place cookies on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes.

This batch makes approximately 50 large cookies! Half the recipe for a smaller batch! I like making a big batch so that I can give cookies away to family and friends with dogs!

Coconut flour is a tricky flour to work with, it absorbs an immense amount of liquid and can be crumby at times. If your dough is too moist, add more coconut flour 1/4 cup at a time. If it is too dry, add more applesauce and pumpkin 1/4 cup at a time. Eggs are your binder, so if it is too crumby add another egg. This flour won't roll out the way wheat flour will, so just work with it! It will bake well and make a yummy soft dog cookie!

Since there are absolutely no preservatives used in this recipe they must be refrigerated. Cookies can be left out for 2 or 3 days at a time.

Absolutely! 3 cups of whole wheat flour or rice flour. If you need a grain free substitute you can use tapioca flour, potato flour, chickpea flour.

I know banana and ground flax seed in water can be used, but a quick google search yields some results:

Started making these and I used oat flour, since I have a bunch of oatmeal on hand .... I ended up adding 8 or 9 cups of flour and 2 cups of oatmeal (not instant) and its still pretty sticky ..... What did I do wrong? lol I am going to roll them into balls and roll the outsides with whole oatmeal, and bake the others like drop cookies. I'm sure that will still work, just curious as to what I did wrong. Haven't had a mess up like this, ever. lol

Thank you for posting this yummy recipe! My daughter is just as excited for them, as her brothers (the dogs)!

Sorry, I can't say! Without seeing the whole recipe it is difficult to know for sure what makes it sticky. Whenever recipes don't work out for whatever reason, I always recommend the drop cookies or small cookie ball bites!

It still makes me laugh. Still don't know what I did wrong, BUT! The cookies still turned out amazingly! My daughter ate 5 or 6 cookies while they were cooling. They are quite tasty! I don't know that the boys (dogs) even tasted them! It has been a long time since they were so excited for treats! I just have ALOT to give out. Good thing we know lots of dogs. :)

Thank you!!!

I think the problem is that the coconut flour absorbs way more liquids (like 4x or so) than the oat flour or any other flour for that matter.

This is the first I've ever heard egg yolks are not good for canines. Where did you get this info, please? Have been feeding whole hard cooked eggs with and without shell for years and now I am concerned I'm doing my beloved pooch harm...HELP???

Cooked eggs - whole or otherwise - are FINE for dogs. Yolks are NOT bad for your dog at all.

Do these come out as hard treats or soft? They look soft in the picture. Either way is fine, I will make them regardless! One of the pups can't eat things too crunchy though! Excited to try!

I added a smashed banana, 1\4 cup flaxseed, & upped the apple sauce by 1\4 cup. Rolled them into golf ball size, flattened them with my palm and pressed star shapes into the tops. Adorable & the pups went batty over them!

Hi, I can't wait to try this recipe! Finally a recipe I think my allergy prone pooch can eat that the new puppies can have too :) I do have a question though; I want to make these much smaller, like bite size training treats, would you have any suggestions on how long I should bake them? I know it says 25 minutes but if I'm making them much smaller should they bake as long?
Thank you so much!

Can't wait to try this recipe out! I'm always looking for grain free or gluten free recipes for my dog and this looks perfect! Have two questions though, can brown rice flour be substituted for the coconut? Will extending the baking time result in crunchier biscuits(our Beagle pup tends to swallow soft/chewy treats without properly chewing)? Thank you for the lovely recipe!

After making them in the dog treat "waffle maker" I put them in the dehydrator to make them crunchy treats- they keep longer without needing to be refrigerated. My pack of 5 love these I make a large batch.

I'm sure you've been to the store since 2017, but in case you run into an glitch in the future, I have some advice. :) Apple juice, though that's going to have sugar. You could skip the apple, too, they'll love these even if it's only pumpkin. Toss in a Tbs of peanut butter for an added kick. The trick is to get the dough to the right consistency. Dogs are rarely picky when it comes to treats like this so it doesn't have to be perfect, which gives us more freedom to tinker.

If given occasionally a little sugar is fine for dogs, barring medical issues. I give mine local honey to help fight allergies and I'll mix honey into their baked goods as a preservative. Honey is impressive when it comes to health. When our Dachshund is super itchy or gassy I'll brew chamomile tea and sweeten it with a half tsp of honey. When she's picky with her food I'll wet it with the tea and she gobbles it up.

Can the coconut flour be replaced with Almond flour?

Reply
JMFS
1/19/2019 12:11:05 pm

Try oat flour instead. Almonds can cause gastrointestinal issues or even pancreatitis (not good - my pup had a slight case from fatty kibble and he was miserable, I can't imagine what a severe case would be like!). Flax flour is okay. I go with oat flour because I can buy a large container of oats for $3 and grind it myself in a blender so it's an economical and healthy choice.

I add honey to my recipes to prolong their shelf life. Honey is a natural preservative. 1 T in this recipe isn't going to be too much sugar for a dog. Bonus points for buying local honey for fighting off allergies. Baking them longer so they harden will also stretch the time they'll keep.

I use oat flour myself or you could do half coconut and half oat to help with the liquid absorption issue. Coffee grinder or blender work fine to make a flour and dogs don't mind if it's crunchy so it doesn't have to be ground über fine. :D I'll usually sift out the finer oat flour and use it for a face mask. BTW, all but the cinnamon in this recipe are great for the face. Just combine until it's spreadable, smooth it over a clean face and wait until it dries, then rinse and marvel at your soft skin. :D

I just want to say Thank You to everyone who supported me through the years. My name is Manuel Franco, New Berlin, Wisconsin. My story of how I won the Powerball lottery of $768.4M is a bit of a tale. I have been playing Powerball tickets for 6 years now since I turned 18. I bought my first ticket on my 18 birthday. I was feeling very lucky that day because I had contacted Dr. Odunga Michael to help me with the winning Powerball numbers. I really had that great great feeling that I looked at the camera wanting to wink at it. I only did a tiny part of it and trusted him. He gave me the numbers after I played a couple other tickets along with it for $10. I checked my ticket after the winnings came online and saw the numbers were correct including the Power play. I screamed for about 10 minutes because it felt like a dream. I had won $768.4M. You can check my winning testimony with the lottery officials just with my name search. Thank you Dr Odunga. Well, his email is [email protected] and you can also call or Whats-app him at +2348167159012 so you guys can contact him

All these years go by, and the first message in ages is some schmuck trying to scam people. Not surprising "dung" is in the email address.

I looked it up, and these people are sub-par humans. They're posting this dribble on obituaries. No spells necessary, Karma will get them.

Please do yourselves a favor (not that anyone would be that gullible, but just in case someone is feeling vulnerable . . . do Not use the contact information given as it is 150% a scam operation.
