Satin Ball recipes for underweight dogs.

There are many reasons some dogs need to put on more weight, and there are both slow and quick ways to do so. A recipe was created specifically for the purpose of putting weight on dogs very quickly, and that recipe is for a "weight supplement" called Satin Balls.

Satin Balls are perfect for underweight working dogs, or emaciated dogs coming in to rescues. Satin Balls were designed to put weight on a dog very quickly and are loaded with calories. While fast weight gain (and fast weight loss) is not very healthy for the body, some dogs need a calorie boost quickly to push them towards regaining a balance of health.

Satin Balls as traditionally made with grains, but I will provide a grain free recipe for dogs with allergies or sensitivities.

Satin Balls (With Grain)
10 pounds of ground beef
1 box of Total cereal (NO RAISINS!!) or Shredded Wheat
1 box of oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup olive oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulphured molasses
10 raw eggs with the shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
A pinch of salt

Satin Balls (With Grain) SMALLER RECIPE
1 pounds of ground beef
1 cup of Total cereal (NO RAISINS!!) or Shredded Wheat
1 cup of oatmeal
1/4 cup of wheat germ
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup of unsulphured molasses
1 raw eggs with the shell
1 envelope of unflavored gelatin
A pinch of salt

Combine all of the ingredients, roll into 1-inch balls and feed them raw! Portions can be frozen for future use, as well.

Grain-free Satin Balls

10 pounds of ground beef
1 large tub of 4% fat cottage cheese
500g of cream cheese
1 1/4 cup olive oil
1 1/2 cup of unsulphured molasses
10 raw eggs with the shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
A pinch of salt

Remember to monitor your dog's weight-gain closely so that you can cease using the satin balls or drastically reduce the amount you feed when your dog reaches their ideal weight.

The size of box of cereal changed since this was developed and studied. It needs a definitive amount rather than the ambiguous "box" or "jar". Definitive quantities are here: www.geniuskitchen.com/amp/recipe/satin-balls-50904

Is there a smaller recipe for those of us that have small breed dogs? 10 lbs is a lot to make in one batch.

Start slowly and monitor. It's all individual based on each dog.

I would love a smaller version of grain free also. I want to make these for my St. Bernard but want to try a smaller scale 1st before making the larger scale.

Are there any drawbacks on cooking the satin balls? My dog is not a fan of raw meat.

We bake as a meatloaf and she is gaining weight slowly. I can not wrap my head around raw meat. If you can feed raw then you can make the balls and freeze.

Cooking should not change nutrients much if cooked slow at 165 degrees

Is there anything to replace total coral and wheat germ with. My dog is skinny and looking into satin balls. She is allergic to wheat corn yeast

It's mostly there for fiber and trace vitamins and minerals. I imagine you could replace with something comparable. Rice cereal maybe?

Please consider the grain free food on the web page attached. It has 501 calories per cup! Has never been recalled and is made in the USA. No corn or wheat glutens! https://www.lifesabundance.com/Home.aspx?realname=20555792&cat=5&hdr=&Ath=True

Actually not basic math if you compare the large recipe with the small.

10 pounds of beef down to 1 pound, you think a tenth of the big recipe then. But no. 1 1/4 cups of oil down to 1/4 cup is not a tenth of what it was.

If you compare the large recipe with the smaller one, it's not as simple as just doing half or quarter. Plus, 1 jar of wheat germ and 1 box of oatmeal, what do you do with those when the size of them isn't even indicated??

If you live in canada there is a place called Bulk Barn., you name it they have it as far as cooking and baking ingredients go and I know for sure they carry molasses and also black strap molasses because that is the only place I found it. If you live in the USA try Trader Joes, that seems to be a go to. good luck

Reply

Not necessary to grind them. I set them aside at the beginning because I like to crumble mine to make the recipe more consistent and because they aren't so sticky after doing almost everything else.

I put eggs and shells into blender and blend them right up, helps with calcium and you don't see them!!

I made this for my lab to gain weight before going to hunting school. long story short he contracted a rare protozoa called Neospora Canium from the raw hamburger. This was the first case they had ever seen at my vet hospital. I am lucky i caught it early and my dog is young... we should be able to beat this but be careful. I bought the meat at Safeway Grocery in a prepacked 3 pound round package. This is very rare... but just know this risk is out there... diagnosis and treatment will likely exceed $500... if you do this maybe buy a bit better hamburger... i bought the cheap stuff as instructed

The cheapest refers to the fat content. Anything more lean than 80% isn't add good for the dog.

Any tips for the size of ball to make for a small (12 lb) dog? These seem to be a size for a larger dog. Maybe 1/4 of the size? Other thoughts?

I don't make balls. I scrape what I want of the chunk.

Aloha - Adding crushed eggshells may not be such a good idea as they contain Salmonella which comes from the chicken itself, most of which carry salmonella. I am prone to getting this disease and so wash my hands after handling an egg--it seems that the shell is the one contaminated but not what is inside the egg once it is cooked. So just to add a note of caution to the use of eggs and eggshells.

From what I recall, the shells help prevent a buildup of amino acids that can be dangerous otherwise.

Toast the shells in a toaster oven for ten minutes and then grind them up with a mortar and pestle to make a powder

K

None of the ingredients are to be cooked. They were evaluated raw. Cooking destroys nutrients that are necessary.

I don't do raw egg shell. I wash and dry the shell, bake it for 5-6 minutes on 300. They will have a slight beige colourization, then I put them in grinder. Egg shells carry bacterial contamination and are very sharp which can lead to damage going down. I won't take either chance with my dogs.

I use coconut oil and add apple cider vinegar to this mixture. I use as a treat or for pregnant mama's. I havevalso used this for my 13 year old house dog when gas is an issue with her kibble.

Thanks SO much for the grain- free version. We reacue old english mastiffs & one has cancer. We couldn't give her the grain ones as it blew her eye up. She went for a wellness check; our vet said if we told him she looked this good, he would have bet against me! One thing I'd like to know. Can you suggest anything to add that isn't a grain that would make it less sticky? Thank you

You may want to add freshly ground flax seeds. Preground flaxseeds from a store has a nutrient loss. Buy a cheap small coffee grinder from Walmart and grind that way.

How big is a "large carton" of cottage cheese? 16 oz from most super markets? 24 oz like from Walmart? 48 oz like from Costco?

For those of you that do NOT want to use raw eggs after reaching the internet I found that Raw eggs do have all the same benefits as cooked eggs. However, eating raw eggs or foods containing them raises concerns about the risk of Salmonella infection. With this being said I boil mine and get the same effect.

We have used this recipe in the past for our great danes that had pups and it worked fantastic - I want to make it again - but wanted to confirm that the "box" of oatmeal is like the tube type of quaker oats - the regular round container we are used to seeing in the store. TIA

I had a dog with EPI, did very well on the powder. My only concern is if you think your dog does have a mal-absortion issue, I would stay away from cheap greasy meat(s). It definitely would cause a flare.

Since I could not find the "original" box of Total - only a "grain free" one I bought
"Special K" with rice. My dogs need grain if they are to put on weight. Someone else asked you about the cereal - I did not see any answers from you. Is "Special K" with rice a good substitute?

This recipe was suggested to me by a long time BMD breeder. I plan to substitute rice cereal (baby food aisle) in lieu of Total or shredded wheat.

These are also excellent for pilling your dog that has grown wise to hot dog and/or cheese pill hiding. Just form a tablespoon of the mix around a pill for easy dosing!

I just want to say Thank You to everyone who supported me through the years. My name is Manuel Franco, New Berlin, Wisconsin. My story of how I won the Powerball lottery of $768.4M is a bit of a tale. I have been playing Powerball tickets for 6 years now since I turned 18. I bought my first ticket on my 18 birthday. I was feeling very lucky that day because I had contacted Dr. Odunga Michael to help me with the winning Powerball numbers. I really had that great great feeling that I looked at the camera wanting to wink at it. I only did a tiny part of it and trusted him. He gave me the numbers after I played a couple other tickets along with it for $10. I checked my ticket after the winnings came online and saw the numbers were correct including the Power play. I screamed for about 10 minutes because it felt like a dream. I had won $768.4M. You can check my winning testimony with the lottery officials just with my name search. Thank you Dr Odunga.
