The benefits of coconut oil for dogs!

What is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is a fantastic addition to any dog's diet. More and more people are discovering the amazing health benefits of virgin, unrefined coconut oil... and we are learning that this oil has lots of benefits for our dogs too!   Coconut oil consists of approximately 90% saturated fats, yet most of those fats are Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs). The main component of the MCTs in coconut oil is lauric acid; which is antiviral, anti-fungal, antibacterial and helps to balance the immune system. MCTs are an excellent source of energy and are extremely easy to digest, as they do not require lipase or gall bladder bile to digest - making it easily processed in the body.

How can Coconut Oil help my dog?

Coconut oil is very beneficial to the skin and coat. The addition of this oil to the diet can result in the alleviation of skin conditions such as itchy skin, eczema and allergies. Coconut oil can reduce allergic reactions and improve the overall health of the skin and coat while making fur soft and shiny. Coconut oil can be used to deodorize as well, which makes it a phenomenal toothpaste substitute for dogs with stinky breath. Coconut oil can also be used to treat both fungal and yeast infections, including candida overgrowth.

Due to the antibacterial properties of coconut oil you can apply it topically to disinfect wounds and skin abrasions and promote quick healing. I have used coconut oil topically on Hunter with nice results, I find that it speeds the recovery significantly while keeping the wound clean. Apply coconut oil to hot spots, insect bites and stings, scrapes and scratches for protection and healing.

This fantastic oil is also used to treat or improve digestive issues and it is also known for improving digestion and nutrient absorption. Coconut oil is also known to assist in normal regulation of the thyroid, which can also help overweight dogs shed the pounds.

In summary, coconut oil is an extremely healthy oil that consists of mostly saturated fats - but don't let that put you off! Coconut oil is extremely rich in Medium Chain Triglycerides and contains lauric acid which is very easily digested and converted to energy. Coconut oil improves skin and coat conditions, allergic reactions, improves digestion and nutrient absorption, support a healthy immune system and disinfects wound and promotes fast healing.

The dosage for coconut oil is one tablespoon for every 30lbs of body weight. Try this healthy oil for your pet, you won't be disappointed!

Put in in your hands rub your hands together, then give her "pets" "body rubs", let her taste a little bit 1st so she knows it's a good thing. I do that with fresh aloe from the leaf, I rub it between my hands call 'em over, and as they run past swipe.... once they realize it won't BURN or Hurt like so many products sold for these things, they won't resist, they'll run right up for it.

Don't do a song and dance when you do it. Have it close to you while your sitting with the dog. While your talking gently to it, apply it then.

I personally would try tea tree oil first

Tea tree oil is toxic to dogs ! I have a friend who put tea tree oil on her dog and he went into convulsions , she called her veterinarian and he informed her that it was dangerous to out tea tree oil on dogs.

Desensitize her to it and don't make a big deal out it for her. You can also ask her to lay down beside the open bottle and give her a massage. Then without her paying attention apply it.

Also, put some on a spoon and have her smell and taste it...mine LOVE it and think its a special treat.... After tasting she'll be more apt to have you add it topically.

it also kills fleas it coats the skeleton of the fleas then they can't breathe and die. My vet recommends it. ( I continue to use activyl spot on and I don't need to use it nearly as often as once a month.I applied v olive oil that comes in the cold pressed form in the jar from the health food store when it melts in your hand and then rub it through the dog's coat down into the skin and the fleas hate it.

My symptoms started at the age of 46. My fingers on my left hand were stiff and were difficult to move. People noticed that my walk was not normal. I was often asked did I hurt. I noticed something different about my walk. It was difficult getting up from` a chair and getting out of a car. I was diagnosed a year later and i have to find a better solution and was introduced to try the help of herbal formula. I am now 59 tho and am fully cured from Parkinson's disease.
contact Total Cure Herbal Foundation on: [email protected] or visit their website at https://totalcureherbalfou5.wixsite.com/herbal/contact i had to use the remedies for 15 weeks usage which really help on my condition.

I started using coconut oil as part of a recipe to make doggie cookies. There is a recipe somewhere here from K9 that includes his other addiction, peanut butter. In a month, his skin had improved remarkedly and his smell is improved, too. He ends up straight out of a jar if I give it to him like that. Sometimes I dribble some on a nylabone and he wants more, and more. I use it on my legs if I get bitten by mosquitos and he now wants to lick my legs!!

OK. Let me make sure I understand how much to Coconut Oil to feed my labs who weigh about 80lbs each....

I found coconut oil on spice isle in Walmart liquid or solid. And also Brookshires has both. I prefer liquid, unless recipe calls for solid. I'm going to try it on my Yorkie, she has skin allergies too. And scratch scratch scratch, it's so annoying for her. And us. I hate to give her allergy meds. but if she starts this gagging and such I have to. She's 6 almost 7 and the older they get the more harmful steroids are for them. Little ones particularly. Hi Jacq! Your dog and I have the misfortune of being ill with the same disease. I hope your furry friend is also on an antibiotic. I can't see why there would be a problem adding in the coconut oil; as far as I know it doesn't interact negatively with other supplements. I heard that Dr. Mercola (The God of natural meds and sups) sells an excellent probiotic for pets. As a human with Lyme Disease and 4 co-infections, I know it is absolutely vital that we take a good probiotic daily if we are on antibiotics. I'm sure you know that not all human supplements are OK for dogs but if your dog suffers with pain, inflammation, arthritis etc from the Lyme, you might want to look into a product with tumeric if it's OK for dogs and I recently read that many dog owners were adding a bit of apple cider vinegar to their dog's drinking water and seeing great benefits! BTW, it is pretty hard to treat humans for Lyme once it's gone past a certain stage however dogs seem to recover quite quickly. My sister had 2 infected dogs who recovered 100% and lived to be 16 and 18 yrs old. May I also recommend you go on amazon or to your pet store and buy a proper tick remover...the key type is good. Never ever just pull or burn the ticks off...they leave their mouth parts inside as well as legs and continue infecting. Good luck!

My GSD was recently diagnosed with anal fistulas. He is in anti inflammaroty meds and laxatives but he seems to be no better and is suffering. He is loosing weight and can't seem to have a normal BM. Do you think he would have any benefit from coconut oil?

Cathy - you should have your dog checked - asap - for EPI - my dog, Frank was diagnosed with this a couple of years ago - he lost 45 pounds in a couple of weeks...his poop looked like grey piles of mud. He was not getting nourishment from his food. I now buy a supplement that is put into every one of his meals and he has been normal ever since... check the website http://www.globalspan.net/epi.htm
for information on what the disease is - and it is prevelant in german shepherds. Best wishes on getting your doggy healthy again!

Our GS, 12 yrs old was diagnosed with an anti-immune disorder and put on Atopica. He was constantly licking his bottom, and it looked like swollen purple donut. Poor guy....He has been on this for a month and a half now. Can't see where it has helped much. He doesn't walk around with his tail straight out as much, I assume because it is hot and that helps to cool it. No diarrhea now, but he just isn't himself. He also has a dry nose, doc says needs to be treated from within. He is on Iams Senior, and a Vit E tablet. Has anyone else delt with this? Do you think coconut oil would help?

Hi Cathy,
Our female GSD had a peri-anal fistula. We eventually had to put her down because she was just suffering too much, but we had 8 mostly good years keeping the disease at bay. It is very important that you find a vet who really knows how to treat this disease. A vet school might be a good place to start. It is an auto-immune disease. There used to be a yahoo group if I remember correctly that deals exclusively with this. It was helpful. I hope that you and your GSD do well!

In reply to my last post about the NOW coconut oil... I meant to say... that I personally use it daily,,, I never thought about giving it to my dogs. My male German shepherd was diagnosed with kidney failure, he has been on a weekend of I.V. and then homeopathic products. I am quite sure he is coming out of it, he wants to play all the time, he is acting like his normal Phantom again! so would it be safe to give him coconut oil on top of his other supplements, like fish oil, omega 6? thanks!

My boy used to LOVE the coconut oil (in his food, mixed with yoghurt, and right off the spoon), but all of a sudden he won't touch it. If I put it in his food, he will eat around it and spit it out on the floor....have you ever had this happen? Any suggestions on what I can do to get him to start eating it again? He has been on antibiotics for the last 2 weeks and I'm wondering if that is the problem (maybe he thinks I'm trying to hide his pills in it)?

Bought Carrington Farms Coconut Oil 54oz pure, unrefined, cold pressed, extra virgin for $15.69 at Costco, great price. Using with our 3 showline GSD who have placed 1st in regional shows, do well in Schutzhund, Tracking and working with veterans group to finish certification for theraphy work with the Veterans in our area. Sorry proud of them! No negative effects, looking forward to what we'll see in the long run. BUT so many different dosage instructions. I also see to start with a very small dose and gradually increase it, so with our experience and research I started with a 1/16 teaspoon moving up to 1 teaspoon once a day. Also see 1 teaspoon and 1 tablespoon per 20lbs??? Can someone clarify what they are actually using as a dosage successfully, for how long they have used it and who/what they used as a reference source for the dosage information. Thanks!

I give mine both the fish oil capsules as well as the coconut oil. The extra Omega-3's won't hurt them, if their stools change drastically, cut back on one or the other...but mine gets 2 fish oil caps 2x a day as well as the coconut oil 2x a day (about 1 tablespoon each meal)

Carrots are good for them. My dogs love them. I had a dog 10 years ago that would jump the fence to the garden and just dig up the carrots. She would just lie down in the grass and eat them. Every year after she started jumping the fence i would just plant more rows of carrots for her!! RIP Mandylee

The difference between Extra Virgin oil and plain is the amount of processing. I get organic, raw, cold pressed. I've seen it sold in all the grocery stores, and the warehouse stores. Coconut oil used internally and externally is so good for us. My hands never felt so soft! But, a little goes a long way.
Also, Coconut water is a great way to re-hydrate dogs (and humans). Just check the label for no added sugars or flavorings. It's great for a special treat as well, or mixed in food daily.

This really works! Batty has been miserable in the summer since she was a year old. Her shot record shows allergy shots every summer, sometimes twice, for the last eight years. I started her in May or June on a teaspoon of coconut oil mixed in her food at supper, and at this point she has not started chewing or licking at all. Usually by now her legs are practically totally naked and all raw. You can get it really cheap at Walmart, probably other stores as well.

I found it in with the other oils at Walmart, may the baking section. I don't see any pont in paying a premium price at a natural food store after seeing the results I got. I probably use a generous teaspoon full, and she weighs about 50 pounds.

There is nothing better for your dog than a well balanced RAW diet... Our 5yr old gsd has been on a raw diet for 6 months and the improvement to his skin, coat, breath, and smell have been nothing shy of amazing! It's hard to wrap your head around it at first but it makes sense; feed them as close to what nature intended them to eat and watch the improvements happen on their own. Our 110 pound GSD eats for under $3.00 a day

Sarah, you should be able to find it in a grocery or health & Beauty aids. Also try Nupro Summplements. nuprosupplements.com. The RX your vet prescribed was an antibiotic, it won't rid the dog of the problem. Do some research online you should be able to find help good luck in helping your pup. Wipe her down when coming in from outside and baths are helpful. I have used lavender one drop on a cloth collar to calm. Keep your dog out of the grass and windy environments. Also remove grain from the diet.

I've recently started following your blog and I'm completely intrigued! I have a GSD named Judge who will be three this November. He has seasonal allergies that begin every year around May 18 and last until end of September / beginning of October. (We don't know what he is allergic to) For that entire period he is on a combination of prednisone and antibiotics. At first the vet thought it was a food allergy but he has no problems during the winter. (We feed him Acana ) when we try to lower his dosage of pred. He gets a rash on his belly/ pecker area. Would coconut oil help him? How would i give it to him? I worry about the effects all the medication will have on him long term. Also, how do you apply coconut oil for wounds? Just like you would an ointment? He recently hurt himself and has quite the gash that couldn't be stitched closed. It's only day 2 but I'm worried about keeping the area clean. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I give this to my cats and dogs. My cat had a growth on her back and i applied this everyday for a week and the growth started shrinking. Big problem though...my cat loves the taste of the coconut oil so she started eating the hair off the area I had applied it so now she has a big bald spot. So I had to stop using it topically. I bought
"Wild Oats" Organic, extra virgin & unrefined Coconut Oil at Walmart. 29 ounces for $11.00 in the baking isle. I just started my dog on this yesterday. He is a 90lb Golden Retriever & suffers horribly in the summer from breakouts of numerous hotspots at one time (at least 4 times) & in the fall he gets a severe skin infection. He is just miserable from The first week of June until about November. The Vet bills are enormous because so many times the hotspots get infected. He is an inside dog, my home is very clean and he is bathed regularily with a mild shampoo per Vet instructions. I pray this works or at least helps. This Spring we are doing the expensive allergy testing when he has his first breakout. I am hoping that between the allergy drops & now the coconut oil my dog Spencer A.K.A. Doodle can enjoy his summer. Thank you for posting this!

just to be clear....I bought coconut oil in jar, it's not in liquid form but hard. So one tablespoon per 30lbs? U just put it on top of his food or allow him to eat off a spoon?

I have a 10 yr old boxer who weighs 90 lbs. He's had allergies and skin infections for as long as I can remember. I've tried everything and the vet bills are enormous. I lived in florida from 2009-2012. He was almost hairless from allergies by the time I moved back to buffalo, NY 2 years ago. The first year here his fur came back beautiful, now it's starting again! When I had him tested for allergies ( and I had to give him injections daily), it showed he was allergic to wheat, corn, chicken and soy. I've always had him on a wheat and soy free dog food, so I don't understand day it's starting up again. I've been feeding him Merrick Texas Beef and he absolutely loves it. I bought the coconut oil and have just started him on it - I'm rubbing it in his skin and in his food, he absolutely loves it! I guess time will tell!

I have an 8yr old shi tzu an every so often he gets a lot of dry flakey skin on his belly. It's not painful or itchy for him but we do have to buy medicated shampoo from the vets which can be quite expensive would the coconut oil help with this

you might try 1/4 teaspoon per day. I couldn't find the exact measurement but I did see this mentioned for a cat with normal weight of 10-11 lbs they recommended 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon. Hope this helps

1 teaspoon per 10lb so I would give her 1/2 tsp.

not sure if coconut oil will help for loose/bloody stools. Sounds like you need a trip to the vet, especially because of the blood. If not for the blood, I would have said, to add some cooked rice to her diet.

I leave my coconut oil in a glass container on my radiator cover so it keeps it warm in the winter and then I can pour a spoonful on my dogs food or dip a cotton ball in and wipe in her ears with it - best smelling ears ever :)

ok, this is how I read it:
1 tablespoon for every 30lbs. Which equals 1 teaspoon for every 10lbs once a day.
Thank you so much for this tip!

My dogs love coconut oil. They have very bad breath so I would love to brush their teeth with it but haven't brushed their teeth before. How do I brush their teeth if the won't hold still?

if your dog has never had coconut oil before start by giving 1tsp per day and work up to 1tbsp per day. A full grown medium to large dog only needs 1tbsp per day after the initial run in period (over a couple of weeks)

Dogs love it. and will lick it off the spoon, or put semi melted blobs on top of their food.

DO NOT melt or soften coconut oil in the microwave, always soften by placing container over bowl of hot water, only takes a few seconds to melt.

Enjoy the benefits of great dog health. its so worth it.

For everyone who is asking where to find this miraculous coconut oil, it is sold commonly almost everywhere... in grocery stores, Costco, Walmart, Sam's, health food stores, amazon, online stores, you name it they've probably got it. It is not an exotic item, it's like buying olive oil. And don't fall into a trap of paying a huge amount of money for a tiny jar, you can buy an inexpensive bucket of it which is just as good. It really can be used for many purposes.. google it and you will see articles on 200 ways to use coconut oil and the like. It really is great stuff!

Hello! I was wondering how long until changes can be noticed by feeding my dog coconut oil? I asked my vet awhile ago if this was okay to do for her and he said fish oil is bes . But I already had coconut oil for my own benefits and used it instead of fish oil for her. The vet said it may upset her stomach. I've used it only a few times didn't see any affect on upset stomach. I can't put it on her food, bcas of my mothers dog and she will not let me. So I just scoop it out and fed it to her. I also was wondering if you knew how much the turmeric costs? My dog has recently developed a few lumps. Only one so far has me worried but the vet said it could progress to cancer later on. And also a skin tumor on her ankle :( She's 9 years old but still my baby.

So that's 1 teaspoon per 10lb. Ok has anyone tried coconut flour a substitute for whole wheat flour in dog treats? Looking for the conversion necessary from amount of whole wheat flour to the amount of coconut flour.

How long till you see a difference on the flaking skin? I used virgin coconut on my german shepherds whole body ...rubbing in into the skin through all the hair. She loved it since she is itchy.

I have a boxer, and we all know boxers are generally the one breed of dog that is literally allergic to EVERYTHING! I have my 2 1/2 year old boy, Murphy, on Blue Buffalo Salmon and Potato Grain Free and the only "human food" I give him are veggies and fruits. I've always heard about Coconut Oil being good for them so I figured I try it out. Can this be a replacement for toothpaste as well? I have the Carrington Farms 100% extra virgin coconut oil and it's in a hard form. I give him some off a spoon to eat. But obviously there's more I can do with it. I need some recipes if you ladies would care to share any.

Life can be such an itch sometimes. Do you and your dog agree? Put an end to your pup’s dry, itchy skin with a dog shampoo designed to soothe sensitive skin and restore shiny coats. Don’t be afraid to throw your dog a bone they’ll really appreciate.

It got me when you said that coconut oil will be great for our pet's skin and coat, since it can treat itchy skin, eczema, and allergies. I will suggest this to my husband so that we can get organic pet oils this weekend to try on our dog. It might work on him, since our dog just started to scratch all over its body when it hasn't happened ever before.

I have been using coconut oil on my dog for a while now and I cannot be more pleased! Not only does he enjoy the taste, but his coat is so much softer and shinier since using it. He has more energy and seems to always be in a great mood!

I just want to say Thank You to everyone who supported me through the years. My name is Manuel Franco, New Berlin, Wisconsin. My story of how I won the Powerball lottery of $768.4M is a bit of a tale. I have been playing Powerball tickets for 6 years now since I turned 18. I bought my first ticket on my 18 birthday. I was feeling very lucky that day because I had contacted Dr. Odunga Michael to help me with the winning Powerball numbers. I really had that great great feeling that I looked at the camera wanting to wink at it. I only did a tiny part of it and trusted him. He gave me the numbers after I played a couple other tickets along with it for $10. I checked my ticket after the winnings came online and saw the numbers were correct including the Power play. I screamed for about 10 minutes because it felt like a dream. I had won $768.4M. You can check my winning testimony with the lottery officials just with my name search. Thank you Dr Odunga.
