Supplements for DogsOptimum health begins with diet and exercise, however supplements are an excellent way to boost health and focus on specific conditions (both in prevention and treatment).
While most supplements are not essential, there are a handful of things that can make a tremendous impact on the health and well being of your dog. Those highly beneficial supplements will be discussed in this section of the guide! |
Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes
|
Probiotics and digestive enzymes are a combination of beneficial bacteria and proteins that are designed to break down food into digestible nutrients that can be readily absorbed and utilized by the body - this provides a significant boost to a dogs' digestive and immune systems! Probiotics help build immune system health by creating a proper balance of healthy bacteria in the body, making it easier for the body to fend off harmful bacteria. Probiotics have also proven to be beneficial to dogs with allergies, digestive disorders and susceptibility to bacterial infections.

Omega Fatty Acids
|
Omega Fatty Acids (omega-6 and omega-3 fats) are essential in a balanced diet for dogs, with numerous health benefits. The ideal sources of omega fatty acids are marine sources such as fish or krill, though hemp seed oil is a good alternative for dogs with fish sensitivities. These monumentally healthy fats are highly beneficial to neurological health and cognitive function, they can improve skin disorders (such as dry skin and allergies) and also contribute to improving other inflammatory conditions. Omega fatty acids are an important requirement for overall optimal health, but most notably will vastly improve cardiovascular health - a healthy heart means a longer life!

Coconut Oil
|
Unrefined, virgin coconut oil is a fantastic addition to any dog's diet. It is rich in Medium Chain Triglycerides such as lauric acid, which is very easily digested and converted to energy. Coconut oil can be used topically and internally. It can be applied to cuts, burns, abrasions and hot spots because it is antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and it promotes rapid healing. Internally, it can be used to improve coat condition; coconut oil results in soft, glossy fur and healthy skin. Coconut oil can also boost digestion and help regulate the bad bacteria in the digestive tract. This healthy oil is also a fantastic addition to a highly active dogs diet as an easily digested energy source.

Turmeric (Curcumin) |
Turmeric (curcumin) and its medicinal properties have been the subject of over 5600 peer-reviewed and published biomedical studies. The main component of Turmeric is curcumin, a substance that has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin is a bio-active substance that fights inflammation at the molecular level. This makes turmeric ideal for senior pets, dogs with arthritis and poor joint health, and any condition with inflammation as a symptom. The anti-inflammatory properties is turmeric are so powerful that it matches the effectiveness of some anti-inflammatory drugs. (Except without the bad side effects!) Turmeric is also a strong antioxidant, helping to neutralize free radicals in the body while stimulating the body's own antioxidant enzymes.
Turmeric can help boost brain function, improve digestion, alleviate symptoms of allergies and even works to help prevent and fight cancer. Turmeric is also used to assist in detoxifying the liver and promote heart health. Read my article on turmeric for dogs here! |
